HERALD PETREL (Trindade) - Pelagic Waters, GA/SC - 6/28/11

Hi All,

A South Carolina 1st record HERALD PETREL (Trindade), according to how the ABA rules pelagic boundaries between states, was seen in pelagic waters about 239 miles due east of the central Georgia coast on 6/28 from the NOAA Ship Gordon Gunter!

According to the American Birding Association the bird is countable in South Carolina due to its location (although due east of the central Georgia coast) being closer to the coast of that state.

The bird was seen east of Georgia, and within 200 nautical miles of a Georgia coast as well, and would be a 1st state record for Georgia too! The jury is still out as to whether the petrel will be countable in Georgia.

Good Near Georgia Birding!
